What is this therapy Approach Everyone Is Talking About?

Couples Somatic Therapy Harrisburg, PA

Couples Somatic IFS Therapy in Harrisburg, Camp Hill, Mechanicsburg, York, PA

You are not just fighting about what happened. You are responding to what happens inside you when it happens.

Somatic IFS-informed couples therapy helps partners explore the protective responses, emotions, body sensations, relational histories, and vulnerable parts that become activated during conflict.

The goal is to help each partner understand their own experience, become more curious about their patterns, and learn to relate to one another differently.

This is an important distinction: the work does not excuse hurtful behavior or remove responsibility. It helps couples understand their reactions while building greater capacity for accountability, repair, and connection.

Internal Family Systems (IFS): understanding our parts

IFS invites us to understand ourselves as having different parts, each with its own feelings, beliefs, needs, and ways of protecting us.

One part might become angry when we feel dismissed. Another might shut down to avoid making things worse. Another might work hard to keep everyone happy because it fears rejection.

Instead of fighting these parts or judging them, we become curious about what they are trying to do for us, what they fear, and what they need.

Somatic psychotherapy: listening to the body's experience

Our experiences don't live only in our thoughts. We may notice our jaw tightening, our chest closing, our stomach dropping, or an urge to move away when something feels threatening or overwhelming.

Somatic work helps us notice these responses, understand what they may be communicating, and develop more choice in how we respond. Rather than only talking about what happened, we pay attention to what is happening in the present moment.
